This July, ABC Virginia’s Richmond office hosted Camp NAWIC, a week-long, hands-on introduction to the trades for young women, free to every camper, thanks to sponsors who covered the full cost of the program, including each camper’s PPE and construction camp gear.
Campers spent their time on a wall build from start to finish: safety and layout, material prep, framing a wall and corner, and hanging drywall. From there, they rotated through six stations covering plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting, masonry, and tiling – a full tour of the trades in a single week. Every station was staffed by a volunteer tradesperson who donated their time to teach, answer questions, and mentor the next generation of women in construction.
We want to bring this to Northern Virginia. Our partner ABC Virginia is looking to launch a similar camp here for 2027–2028, and we’re now seeking committed partners and committee members ready for a year-long effort to build it from the ground up. In the Meantime: We Build Prince William
Northern Virginia’s next big opportunity to reach young talent comes sooner. In April 2027, We Build Prince William will introduce middle school students across the region to the full range of careers available in the construction trades, a first look at an industry many students don’t yet know is an option for them.
